Cal Lee, the most successful high school football coach in Hawaii history, is poised for another go-round as Saint Louis School head coach.
Lee, now defensive coordinator at Kalani, his alma mater, is among candidates interviewing for the Crusaders position vacated when Matt Wright was fired in December after two seasons. Lee was scheduled to interview with a committee from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu school today, sources close to Saint Louis said this week.
Lee declined comment when asked if he is a candidate.
Saint Louis finished 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the ILH last season, with the two losses coming against fellow Division I teams Kamehameha and Punahou.
Lee announced his retirement from Saint Louis prior to the 2001 season, which was his last as a high school head coach. His record was 241-32-5 and included a string of 14 consecutive Oahu Prep Bowl and state championships.
Saint Louis had a 55-game winning streak from 1985 to 1990 under Lee, who was named national coach of the year by the Sporting News in 1995 and the National Federation of State High School Associations in 2000.
After leaving Saint Louis, Lee was head coach of the AFL2 Hawaiian Islanders and linebackers coach and defensive coordinator at the University of Hawaii. He was among the assistant coaches not retained when head coach Norm Chow took over at UH in 2012. That’s when Lee joined his brother Ron at Kalani, and he also went to work for the state’s concussion education program.
Since Lee’s departure, the Crusaders won state championships in 2002 and 2010.
One of Lee’s former players, Craig Stutzmann, has also expressed interest in the job, sources said. The former All-State slotback and UH captain was most recently receivers coach at Weber State. Stutzmann’s extensive resume also includes junior varsity coach at Saint Louis from 2004 to 2007. Stutzmann also declined comment.
Saint Louis athletic director Ed Paola said Wednesday, "When we have information, we’ll put it out in a press release."
