A convicted felon wanted for violating his parole is facing charges that he tried to kill three police officers who were attempting to arrest him Jan. 23 after he flipped his car over while trying to flee from them.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging Nicolas P. Nakano, 32, with four counts of first-degree attempted murder, using a firearm to commit the crimes, two firearm possession charges and drug possession. Circuit Judge Richard Perkins set bail at $1 million.
Deputy Prosecutor Chastity Imamura told Perkins that police followed Nakano after spotting him in a vehicle. She said Nakano then fled and crashed his vehicle into another car in Kahala, causing his own car to flip onto its roof. Nakano then exited the overturned vehicle and fled on foot.
Police said officers caught up to Nakano at the nearby Waialae Country Club golf course. "One officer was able to detain him and the defendant fired a shot from a semi-automatic pistol at the officer’s head," Imamura said.
She said Nakano pulled the trigger two more times while the two other officers were in front of him but the weapon did not fire.
The grand jury charged Nakano with one count of attempted murder for each of the three officers plus one for attempting to kill all three at the same time. The drug possession charge stems from the discovery of a bag containing an eighth of an ounce of methamphetamine along Nakano’s flight from his vehicle.
Nakano is allegedly associated with a weapons-trafficking circle on which police have been trying to crack down. Their measures include a raid on a Kailua home a day before Nakano’s indictment, according to a source.
Honolulu police were joined in the Mokapu Boulevard raid by agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Marshals Service, the source said. Officers were searching for two targets, the source said.
After police arrived, a group fled from the house and was stopped a short distance away, the source said.
An HPD spokeswoman could confirm only that officers conducted a joint raid on Mokapu Boulevard.
About 6:40 p.m., officers arrested three people several blocks from the raid and detained a 46-year-old man at the home about 8 p.m. The man was arrested for investigation of three counts of third-degree promoting a dangerous drug.
The three other people arrested were: a 36-year-old man on suspicion of reckless driving, a 38-year-old woman on several warrants, and a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of a drug offense.
Hawaii Paroling Authority Administrator Tommy Johnson said the parole board on Dec. 5 issued a warrant for Nakano’s arrest for possessing or using marijuana and methamphetamine, not telling his parole officer his location and moving residences without authorization. He said Nakano was on parole for auto theft, a car break-in, credit card theft, identity theft and unauthorized possession of someone else’s personal, confidential information.
Nakano has other felony convictions for theft, burglary, robbery and kidnapping.
