In the end, it was the multiple skills of senior Penina Faumui that could not be denied.
Faumui scored 22 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and was a key player in Farrington’s pressbreaker as the Governors outlasted Kalani 68-58 on Wednesday to capture the OIA White Conference girls basketball championship.
A boisterous audience of about 1,000 watched at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium.
"Kalani’s press is really strong. Every day we practice breaking the press," Faumui said.
Coach Steven Leopoldo said he’ll miss Faumui after she graduates.
"Her ballhandling really helped us. That was the key tonight," he said. "She’s a big plus for us."
Farrington (9-3) dominated the paint, getting 20 points and 21 rebounds from Jeneva Toilolo. But it took a 24-14 run in the fourth quarter to break a tie game with the pesky, quick Falcons.
Molimeu Heimuli hustled for 10 points and six boards.
Carly Kakuda led Kalani (6-7) with 21 points, including 9-for-10 shooting at the foul line. Kakuda went down to the hardwood with a cramp in her left leg on two occasions in the second half, taking some of the wind out of Kalani’s sails.
"I’m proud of our girls. They played their hardest, 100 percent, but the shots didn’t fall," first-year coach Chi Mok said.
Tristyn Nishibun added 15 points, including three treys. In all, Kalani shot
7-for-32 from the arc (22 percent).
Mok’s motion offense worked wonders early against the much taller and bigger Governors. Kalani had a 13-6 lead before Farrington rallied late in the opening quarter. The lead changed hands five times in the first half as the Govs pounded the ball inside to Faumui and Toilolo.
Farrington had a seven-point lead in the first half, but Kalani chipped away and regained the lead briefly, 41-40, on a pair of free throws by Kakuda late in the third quarter.
Farrington went back ahead, but Tailii Iinuma’s 3-pointer at the buzzer tied it at 44 going into the fourth.
From there, the Falcons went cold from the field while Faumui went to work. She scored six points in a
10-2 run to start the final quarter. Kakuda hit a couple of foul shots to bring Kalani within 54-49 with 4:21 to play, but the Falcons got no closer.
Faumui was clutch, hitting all eight of her free-throw tries for the game. Farrington made 12 of its 18 foul shots in the final quarter.
Faumui came into the game with a 23-point average in league play. She scored 35 in her regular-season matchup against Kalani.
Both teams had already clinched berths in the D-II state tournament.
