A California educator jailed on felony charges of sex abuse acknowledged to police that she had a sexual relationship with a former student who confronted her over the phone and posted video of the conversation on YouTube, police said.

In court papers obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, Riverside police Detective Roberta Hopewell said that 40-year-old Andrea Cardosa told Alhambra police she had a sexual relationship with the now-28-year-old woman who made the video when the alleged victim was a teen.

The officers interviewed Cardosa after the woman sent a link to the video to the principal of Alhambra High School, where Cardosa was an assistant principal, Hopewell wrote in a declaration in support of an arrest warrant for Cardosa filed in Riverside County Superior Court.

"During the interview, Cardosa admitted to having sexual relationship with Jane Doe #1," Hopewell wrote.

The declaration sheds additional light on the case that was spurred when the woman posted a videotape on Jan. 17 of the telephone conversation she had with Cardosa about the alleged abuse on YouTube. Cardosa resigned her job that day.

Within days, the video was seen nearly a million times.

On Monday, prosecutors charged Cardosa with 16 counts of sexual assault and abuse involving two alleged victims, including the maker of the YouTube video.

Messages left Tuesday for Cardosa’s lawyer, Randy Collins, were not immediately returned.

The AP does not usually name people who are alleged victims of sex crimes.
