Racing the NCAA’s recruiting clock, the University of Hawaii secured oral commitments from a linebacker and two cornerbacks on Sunday morning.
Linebacker Malachi Mageo of Junipero Serra High in California and cornerbacks Jerrell Jackson of Louisiana’s Haynesville High and Jalen Rogers of Arizona’s Mesa College reaffirmed their pledges after completing their Hawaii recruiting trips on Sunday morning.
The so-called dead period, in which contact is restricted to one phone call and no face-to-face meetings between coaches and prospects, begins today and runs through Thursday. Wednesday is the first day recruits may sign binding National Letters of Intent.
Mageo, Jackson and Rogers promised to sign on Wednesday, bringing UH’s expected total to 21. Each school is limited to 25 initial scholarships each year.
Linebacker Jeremy Castro, who redshirted in 2013 after transferring from UCLA, counts toward the Rainbow Warriors’ 2014 recruiting class.
Wide receiver Mack Richards of Alta (Utah) High is expected to sign. But he plans to go on a church mission beginning this summer and will not join the Warriors until June 2016. He will not count as a 2014 initial recruit.
All-purpose Dayton Furuta of Mililani High, wide receiver Donald Lambert of Moanalua High, and safety Manly Williams of Farrington High will sign scholarship agreements with the intent of enrolling in January 2015. They can count either to this year’s recruiting class or next year’s.
With the Warriors shifting to a 3-4 base this season, the focus was on recruiting linebackers and cornerbacks. The Warriors received oral commitments from three linebackers and five who can play linebacker or rush end.
This class has four corners: Jackson, Rogers, Cesar Fermin of California’s Moorpark College, and Nick Nelson of Maryland’s Suitland High. Fermin, who signed in December, has to complete a class before joining the Warriors in June.
Rogers, who is 6-1 and 185 pounds, said he turned down offers from New Mexico and San Diego State. He redshirted during his first year at Mesa College, giving him three years to play three seasons for the Warriors.
"It worked out well for me," Rogers said.
Jackson said he will be reunited with his best friend, Daniel Lewis, a safety/running back who also will sign with UH on Wednesday.
Jackson, who is 6-1 and 179 pounds, gave an oral commitment to San Diego State last year. But after going on an SDSU recruiting trip, he changed his mind and chose UH. He reaffirmed his decision on Sunday.
"I’m 18 years old, and I get to play football on the island," Jackson said. "I love Hawaii. I didn’t want (the visit) to end. Hawaii feels like home. I like the coaches and the program and the academics. And I get to play football with some cool people."
