Rapper Kendrick Lamar, who made headlines for failing to win a Grammy at last month’s ceremony, will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m. March 8 at Blaisdell Arena.
Many music critics say Lamar’s acclaimed debut album, "good kid, m.A.A.d. city," deserved the award for best rap album, a trophy that went to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis instead. (Even Macklemore agreed, texting Lamar shortly after the Jan. 26 Grammys saying the Compton, Calif., rapper was "robbed" and that he had wanted to dedicate his award to him.)
Lamar, a protege of Dr. Dre, performed at the Grammy ceremony with Imagine Dragons.
"Good kid, m.A.A.d. city" ended up on many best-of-2013 lists. "Displaying the limitless ambition of a young RZA or Kanye West, this much-anticipated, Dr. Dre-sanctified release is a cinematic concept album stuffed full of examples of the Los Angeles rapper’s versatility, creativity and willingness to take chances most other rappers would blanche at," said Associated Press music critic Chris Talbott in his review.
Lamar’s Honolulu appearance is being presented by DigsHawaii,Tantriq, Dirty Pigeon and M Nightlife. Tickets are $55 to $150 and are available at ticketmaster.com, TicketMaster outlets and the Blaisdell box office.
