Nevada’s sports books took in $119.4 million in bets on the Super Bowl, resulting in a win of $19.7 million, or 16.5 percent. The "handle," which is the total amount bet, was a record, topping the previous high of $98.9 million set last year. The Seattle Seahawks’ 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos meant that Seattle and over (total points scored) bettors got the money. The house doesn’t always win, but it usually does — this was the 22nd time in 24 years that the casinos have won on the Super Bowl.
» ONJ to Flamingo: Olivia Newton-John has been confirmed for a summer "residency" at the Flamingo, playing on dates when Donny and Marie are off. The schedule is April 8-12; May 6-10, 27-31; July 1-5, 29-31; and Aug. 1, 2, 5-9, 12-16, 19-23, 26-30. Tickets begin at $69. A similar engagement was planned for last year but didn’t occur.
» Big pizza: Pin-Up Pizza has opened at Planet Hollywood. It claims the "longest slice on the Strip" — at 15 inches — for $4.75. The New York-style pizzeria is accessible directly from the Strip and is open till 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday (4 a.m. on weekends).
» Big burgers: "Iron Chef America" star Bobby Flay’s new burger joint has opened in CityCenter (beneath Mandarin Oriental). Bobby’s Burger Palace is open for lunch and dinner, featuring — what else? — a bunch of big gourmet burgers.
QUESTION: Was there an over/under on the national anthem this year?
ANSWER: There were lines at offshore sports books on this proposition that’s become a tradition in the world of Super Bowl betting. Despite the artsy rendition by opera singer Renee Fleming, the time went easily under the 2:20 mark set at most books.
