Hawaii junior Jarrett Arakawa passed his final hurdle on Sunday and will return to the mound this weekend for the first time since 2012.
The left-hander from ‘Iolani, who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, threw well enough in a scrimmage that Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso will start him Saturday night in the second game of the season-opening series against No. 7 Oregon at Les Murakami Stadium.
"He threw very good," Trapasso said Monday. "He’ll start on Saturday."
Arakawa last pitched for the Rainbow Warriors in 2012, when he was 7-6 with a 2.88 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 97 innings. He pitched at least seven innings in eight of his 15 starts with two complete games.
Senior Matt Cooper, who led UH with a 3.14 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 86 innings last season, will get the nod on Friday night.
UH will turn to left-hander Scott Squier, the team’s opening-night starter a year ago, on Sunday, with senior Scott Kuzminsky tentatively scheduled to pitch Monday.
Kuzminsky will double as the team’s closer if the situation presents itself in the first three games, with junior Lawrence Chew likely done for the season with an elbow injury.
Squier finished 2013 with a respectable 3.44 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 55 innings, but missed the final month of the season after he was suspended for violating team rules.
He was recently named the 54th best college prospect overall and No. 33 among pitchers in a Top 100 list done by Baseball America last month.
"He’s been a completely different guy in his approach to everything we’ve done and I’ve been real proud of him so far," Trapasso said. "I think last year was a humbling experience for him. While he’s getting the attention on the pro side, he never talks about it and it’s all about the team and what he can do to help."
UH will be without junior Andrew Jones, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, for the first couple of weeks of the season. Freshman Quintin Torres-Costa, who underwent the same procedure, is expected back a little further on down the line.
