Mayor tours Philippines to give business, sister-city ties a lift
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is traveling in the Philippines this week as part of a trade mission with the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii.
The purpose of the trip, which began Tuesday and runs through Feb. 17, is to strengthen ties, promote business opportunities and renew sister-city agreements made by previous administrations.
The delegation is visiting Manila City, Vigan, Candon City, Baguio City and San Fernando Pampanga and meeting with dignitaries in each of those cities, the mayor’s office said in a release.
Caldwell is also expected to speak at a business workshop, "Investment Opportunities in Hawaii," in Manila on Monday.
City Budget Director Nelson Koyanagi Jr. is acting mayor through Thursday because Managing Director Ember Shinn, who under the City Charter becomes acting mayor when Caldwell is out of town, is herself on a trip attending a meeting of the Urban Land Institute in Portland, Ore. Shinn will then assume acting mayor duties until Caldwell returns to Honolulu on Tuesday.
