When things got tight and tense, the Farrington Governors turned to Isaiah and Isaiah once again.
Isaiah Smith scored 18 points, including three treys in the third quarter, and Isaiah Visoria poured in a game-high 23 points as No. 3 Farrington outlasted Campbell 66-49 to capture the OIA Red boys basketball championship on Thursday.
"We expected a tough game from Campbell. They’re a great team," said Farrington coach Alan Silva, who has now guided the Governors to Red and White league titles. "Our guys played smart."
It was a matchup between the OIA favorite, Farrington, and the hottest team in the league, Campbell. It was also an interesting matchup two years in the making. In 2012, Campbell won the Red junior-varsity crown, while Farrington took the White JV title.
Before roughly 1,000 fans at steamy McKinley Student Council Gymnasium, the Governors left no doubt.
Campbell used a sticky 1-2-2 zone to slow the speedy Governors for a half, but Smith’s first 3-pointer gave Farrington a 33-31 lead midway through the third quarter. Farrington never trailed again. Reserve guard Mark Dudalao fed Smith for all three of his third-quarter bombs, helping the Govs take a 44-39 lead into the fourth quarter.
"I just followed my instincts. When I hit one, I felt good," said Smith, who had three steals. "After the first one, I told (Mark), keep giving me the ball."
From there, a 13-5 run, including a steal by Smith for Jacob McEnroe’s third slam dunk of the game. That brought Gov fans to their feet with about 4 minutes to play and the lead up to 57-44 lead. Campbell got no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
The Sabers (17-10) had already clinched a state-tourney berth. It was their second loss to Farrington this season. The Govs won a preseason matchup, 75-60, at the St. Francis Merv Lopes Classic.
"I’m super happy for these kids. They got through a lot of adversity," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said. "Now our second season is done. We were the runner-up, and our third season is next."
Visoria, a transfer from Roosevelt, scored 11 points in the fast-paced, frantic first quarter.
"We wanted to keep pushing it," the 5-foot-10 guard said. "We got momentum. We took the lead and kept going."
McEnroe was surrounded by defenders all night, but still had 11 points and six boards.
"Our guys kept talking to each other and we stayed positive. I had to do something positive on defense," the 6-3 swingman said after blocking two shots. "Campbell never gave up. They’re a scrappy team. It was real tight, but we have the mentality that we can beat anybody. They helped us get ready for states."
