Pacelli repeats at Turtle Bay
Brazilian Nicole Pacelli dominated the final heat en route to successfully defending her Turtle Bay Women’s Pro standup paddleboard event Tuesday off Turtle Bay.
Pacelli finished with a 14.84 in the final, five points ahead of runner-up and part-time Hawaii resident Candice Appleby (9.84). In the opener of the World Standup Tour, Sophia Tiare Bartlow of Hawaii (9.37) made her pro debut with a close third in an event that featured 18 of the top female SUP pros in the world.
Great Aloha Run Expo opens
A high school fitness challenge, cooking demos and weightlifting competition are among the events at the Great Aloha Run Sports, Health & Fitness Expo that opens Friday at the Blaisdell Center.
The Expo runs from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $4, $2 for active duty military and dependents, and free for seniors 65 and older and children 12 and under.
Other events include Saturday’s 25th Silver Streaks 2-mile walk for seniors ages 55 and older at Ala Moana Beach Park. Distribution of numbers and late registration for $20 is at 6:45 a.m. with the walk at 7:30 a.m.
Late registration and packet pickup for Monday’s 30th Great Aloha Run is available during expo hours.
Joy, Smolenski win surfski
Ed Joy won the men’s surfski division and Mary Smolenski the women’s of last Sunday’s Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association race from Maunalua Bay to Magic Island.
Joy finished the 10.5-mile course in 1 hour, 6 minutes and 57 seconds, besting a field of 154 finishers who competed in surfski, OC-1, V-1, OC-2, prone and standup paddleboard. Travis Grant was six seconds behind Joy in the event, the second in the Maui Jim’s Waterman Series.
Smolenski finished in 1:14:48 with Anna Mathison second in 1:20:56.
