Man charged with kidnapping
A 22-year-old Kalihi man has been charged with allegedly kidnapping a 16-year-old boy at gunpoint Tuesday.
Sunia Faaofonuu was charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping, first-degree theft, second-degree assault, extortion using a firearm and three firearm violations. His bail was set at $150,000.
Police said a man took out a gun and threatened a 16-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman on Kealoha Place near Kuhio Park Terrace in Kalihi at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. When he took off with the boy, the woman called police.
Police located the boy and the suspect at a Kamehameha IV Road address. Police also recovered a handgun that they believe was stolen in a burglary.
Witness helps nab suspect
An alert witness helped police catch a suspect in a car break-in in the Ala Moana area early Thursday morning, police said.
The witness called police after seeing a man break into a vehicle at about 12:50 a.m.
Responding officers located the suspect and arrested the 42-year-old man.
Causes of death of 2 tourists will be probed
Autopsies are planned to determine the causes of death of two tourists in separate incidents on Maui.
On Wednesday, Joseph Klein of Alberta was found floating face down near the rocky shoreline off the Kaleialoha condominiums on Lower Honoapiilani Road in Lahaina at 1:15 p.m.
Maui police said the victim was unconscious but breathing. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.
A 63-year-old Nebraska tourist died while swimming at Launiupoko Park near Lahaina on Wednesday.
Maui police said Lloyd Kahlandt of Tekamah, Neb., was swimming in the ocean 25 feet from the south shore of the park at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday when he went underwater and did not resurface.
People pulled the victim out of the water and were administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation when firefighters and paramedics arrived. The victim died at the scene.
Kihei home fire does $450,000 in damage
A two-story home in Kihei was badly damaged by fire Thursday night, causing an estimated $450,000 worth of damage.
The fire at Kaipii Place was reported at 11:20 p.m. and extinguished at 2 a.m.
A Maui Fire Department spokesman said the fire burned about half of the 3,000-square-foot home. Two female occupants of the home evacuated.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
