Punahou coach Jeff Meister can let out a sigh of relief as both the Buffanblu girls and boys programs scooped up titles at the OC 16/ HHSAA Swimming & Diving State Championships on Saturday at Kamehameha-Hawaii.
With the wins, Meister earned his 26th and 27th state titles coaching at the high school level.
The Punahou boys edged out ILH rival Kamehameha, clinching the title by winning the 400 freestyle relay.
But it was Jasmine Mau who stole the spotlight, setting state records in the 100-yard butterfly (52.23) and 200-yard freestyle (1:47:14).
The Punahou senior also swam on her team’s winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays teams — in state-record times.
Mau passes the torch to the next generation of Punahou swimmers, like freshman Lia Foster, who earned her first individual state titles in the 100-yard backstroke as well as the two relay teams.
Kealakehe’s Cara Jernigan set a state record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.41 and earned the Waveriders a title in the 200-yard individual medley.
On the boys side, Baldwin’s Jonah Hu set a state record with a time of 55.72 in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Campbell’s Makoa Alvarez tied a record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.79.
