On Saturday night, the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine proved themselves a constellation, not simply a solar system.
Several players shined in the absence of injured star forward Kamilah Jackson, around whom UH’s fortunes usually revolve. The Wahine outplayed Cal State Fullerton for a 65-52 victory at the Stan Sheriff Center, keeping UH (13-10, 7-4 Big West) in sole possession of third place in the conference standings.
Four players scored in double figures for the Wahine, whose bench outscored Fullerton’s 23-1. That was largely thanks to a team-high 14-point night on 5-for-5 shooting from freshman guard Briana Harris, who sank all three of her 3-point looks.
"It was an atmosphere that I really liked," said Harris, who’d seen limited playing time since missing the first five games of Big West play with an ankle injury. "The bench was going crazy."
Jackson suffered a right ankle injury in Thursday’s 67-54 win over UC Riverside. Though she returned to complete that game, she has since worn a protective boot. She did not take off her warmups while watching the Fullerton game from the UH bench.
It was the all-conference forward’s first missed game in more than three years.
Without its top rebounder, UH nonetheless outrebounded Fullerton 42-32. The Wahine crafted a 12-point lead by halftime and never saw their lead slip below 10 in the second half.
UH coach Laura Beeman said she had a feeling after the Riverside game that Jackson might miss some time.
"I thought we did well without her," Beeman said. "We were able to generate points. We had our lulls, but were able to pick up the rebounding in other areas."
For one night, anyway, her absence didn’t hurt. Sophomore Destiny King approached triple-double numbers with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Wing Shawna Kuehu scored 12 points and point guard Morgan Mason had 11 points and five rebounds. Reserve Ashleigh Karaitiana scraped for nine points and nine boards.
"We’ve always been about us, and not about individuals," King said. "It was about everyone crashing (for boards), and not just two or three people."
With UH heading back on the road for games at UC Irvine and UC Davis this week, it was unclear when Jackson, UH’s nightly double-double threat, might return. Five regular-season games remain before the Big West tournament.
"The biggest thing is we have to get her ready for that conference tournament," Beeman said. "No idea when she’s coming back. We’re going to take our time with it, though."
Guard Alex Thomas led Fullerton (9-14, 5-5) with 25 points on 15-for-19 free-throw shooting, while Chante Miles added 17. But the rest of the Titans combined for just 10 points.
