Retired Adm. R.J. “Zap” Zlatoper, honorary consul of Slovenia, second from left, and his wife, Barry Zlatoper, welcomed Niklaus Schweizer, retired honorary consul of Switzerland, left, Swiss visitor Ulrich Wolf and former Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle to the Consular Corps of Hawaii 2014 Inaugural Ball Feb. 15 at The Royal Hawaiian hotel. Adm. Zlatoper received the corps’ 2013 Distinguished Service Award and told the audience, “A diplomat is someone who can tell you to go to hell, and say it in such a way that you look forward to the trip.”

FUNDRAISER CELEBRATES ‘HALOA’ FILM
Hawaiian cultural practitioner Daniel Anthony, second from left, and Kamehameha Schools seniors La‘ahia Kekahuna, left, Lahela Paresa and Tayler Fitzsimmons were guests of honor Feb. 13 at a gourmet dinner fundraiser for “I am Haloa,” a documentary film about the importance of taro cultivation to Hawaiian culture, at the home of Dr. Thomas Kosasa in Nuuanu. Producer/writer Torry Viliami Tukuafu gave guests an update on the film, which follows the students as they spend 90 days cultivating, harvesting, preparing and eating taro products for three meals a day.

Lau is the corps’ newly inaugurated dean; Shigeeda is this year’s vice dean and will assume the top post next year.

‘ELEGANCE’ REIGNS AT THE SHERATON

George Ariyoshi and Jean Ariyoshi Feb. 15 after Takeda presented his new designs in “Elegance in Paradise,” a fashion show fundraiser for the Japanese Women’s Society Foundation, at the Sheraton Waikiki. It was a big day for Takeda and a busy weekend for the Ariyoshis — the former governor’s 88th birthday is March 12 and friends began the celebrating with an informal party Feb. 14.
