Waikiki, downtown crime sweep nets 137
Honolulu police arrested 137 people and issued more than 200 citations during an overnight sweep of high-crime areas in Honolulu.
The sweep, which began at 8 p.m. Friday and continued until 5 a.m. Saturday, covered areas of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki that generate the most complaints.
Most of the arrests were for outstanding warrants, driving under the influence of an intoxicant and drug-related offenses.
Some 208 citations were issued for jaywalking, minor traffic offenses and park rules violations.
The ages of those arrested ranged from 18 to 69.
3 suspects sought in armed robbery
Police are looking for three males who robbed the Winner’z Zone arcade in Waipio at gunpoint early Saturday.
The males entered the arcade on Ka Uka Boulevard about 2:34 a.m., brandished a handgun and demanded money from a 45-year-old employee, police said.
A source said the men were wearing masks and smashed the front door to get in after the arcade had closed. They demanded money from an employee who was closing up and fled with cash.
Winner’z Zone spokeswoman Kim DeYoung said company officials are glad no one was hurt. She declined further comment to protect the police investigation.
Man faces drug and ammunition charges
Police discovered crystal meth and ammunition while searching at a man’s house in Lahaina on Thursday.
Lahaina police officers had a search warrant and discovered more than eight grams of crystal methamphetamine, four glass pipes, a paper bindle containing meth, a surveillance camera, a monitor and two shotgun rounds. The items were found Thursday at 6:10 a.m.
Paea K. Faleta, 41, was arrested and charged with first-degree meth trafficking, three counts of promoting a dangerous drug, four counts of prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia, and storing ammunition, according to the Maui Police Department.
His bail was set at $17,200.
Alleged television thief remains in custody
A 34-year-old man is awaiting a court appearance after he stole a television by pretending to return it to a store, police said.
William D. Tagovailoa, of Kapolei, was charged Friday with second-degree theft and remained at the Honolulu police cell block Saturday, unable to post $25,000 bail. He was also charged with two probation violations.
Police said Tagovailoa entered a store in the Ala Moana area about 3:15 p.m. Thursday and placed a TV in a shopping cart. He tried to return the item with a previous receipt.
When the store refused to give Tagovailoa a refund, he left the store with the TV, police said.
Officers arrested Tagovailoa about half an hour later at Ala Moana Center.
Bird watcher rescued in good condition
Hawaii island and federal firefighters rescued a lost bird watcher early Saturday morning in Kaumana, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
The man, 65, who was visiting the island, entered the forest near the 22-mile marker on Saddle Road to go bird-watching about 6:30 a.m. Friday. He hiked until 10:30 a.m. and got lost.
Eleven county firefighters and two federal firefighters from Pohakuloa Training Area responded just after 8 p.m. Federal firefighters found the man deep in the ohia forest about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and escorted him out.
He was in good condition.
Corrections officers sought on 3 islands
The Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for adult correction officer positions on the Hawaii island, Kauai and Maui.
To qualify, applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, must pass a physical agility test, and have at least one year of responsible work experience that demonstrates the ability to relate effectively with people in following a supervisor’s instructions and giving or exchanging information.
Recruitment will continue online until midnight Thursday.
