Kauai’s Malia Manuel won the ASP 6-Star QS Hunter Ports Women’s Classic at the Newcastle Surfest in Australia Sunday.

Manuel was up against fellow Hawaii surfer Alessa Quizon of Makaha in the finals and competed against Sage Erickson in the semifinals.

Manuel scored a two wave heat total of 15 (out of a possible 20) and won $8,000.

Quizon came in with a 12.23 for a prize of $4,000 according to the Association of Surfing Professionals.

“I didn’t come to Surfest last year and I’m so glad I came back this year,” Manuel said in a news release. “I’m really happy to be back in Newcastle, I’m definitely more in love with life today than I was yesterday. I’m really excited to surf heats and to be back in Australia early for the start of the ASP season. I got second the last time I was here, so I know how it feels to be the bridesmaid and it feels really good to step up.”

She competes next week in the Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s World Championship Tour season at the Roxy Pro in Australia.
