UH’s Goicoechea earns 2 swimming honors
Victor Goicoechea took home two honors (men’s swimmer and freshman of the year), while Amund Gismervik and Aimee Harrison were named divers of the year during Saturday’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Swimming and Diving Championships held in Southern California. This was the second straight year Harrison was named diver of the year.
UH’s Mike Brown and Anita Rossing were named co-coaches of the year on the women’s side for the second year in a row, while coach Victor Wales took the men’s swimming coach of the year. Goicoechea set an MPSF record in the 1,650 free event, finishing with a time of 14:52.10. Jasmine Alkhaldi broke a meet record in the women’s 100 free, with a finishing time of 49.27. Yuri Samouilich won the men’s 100 free, while both UH teams won the 400 free relay.
The Rainbow Warriors finished second in the overall team standings, with the Rainbow Wahine placing fourth. The UH divers continue their season at the March 13-15 NCAA zone qualifying meet in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Hawaii water polo team splits 2 matches
The University of Hawaii women’s water polo team concluded the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on Sunday by splitting two matches.
In the morning session, No. 11 San Jose State upset the No. 6 Rainbow Wahine 10-9. Hawaii’s Danielle Lewis and Paula Chillida each scored two goals.
Hawaii then bounced back in the afternoon session with a 10-7 victory over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara. Emily Carr led Hawaii with three goals.
On Saturday morning, No. 13 UC San Diego upset the Rainbow Wahine 10-9 in overtime. UH then scored a 10-6 win over No. 18 San Diego State in the afternoon match.
For the tournament, Hawaii went 2-2 and finished 11th out of 16 teams.
Hawaii (7-4) continues its season at the Claremont Convergence Tournament in Claremont, Calif., March 7-8.
