The announcement by Outback Steakhouse parent company Bloomin’ Brands Inc. that it would close 22 under-performing locations does not affect Hawaii, confirmed Elizabeth Watts, director of media and community relations.

Hawaii’s six Outback Steakhouse locations are in Waikiki, Hawaii Kai, Waipio, Kapolei, Kihei, Maui and in Kailua-Kona.

Florida-based Bloomin’ Brands will close the stores before the end of the first quarter to make way for new expansion.

The stores to be closed have negative sales, ruling them out as candidates for relocation, according to industry reports.

Koch did not provide an estimate of how many people the company employs in the islands.
