Craig Oka wasn’t much of a movie fan until his daughter, Misty-Ann, got a job in Hollywood. The ‘Iolani graduate most recently worked for George Clooney as an assistant to the producer on "The Monuments Men." She also worked for Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company on "12 Years a Slave," according to her father.
Oka, a 57-year-old electrician from Waipio Gentry, said he started watching more movies "just so we’d have things to talk about."
Now they can talk about how Oka turned in a perfect ballot in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s 2014 Oscarama contest. Oka was among 39 entrants who correctly guessed the winners in the six major categories and the foreign-language film tie-breaker. A random drawing determined the prize winners.
He will receive $200, four Consolidated Theatres movie passes and a $40 gift certificate to Wahoo’s Fish Taco.
"I did my picks and talked to my daughter, and a lot of them were the same," Oka said. "The real hard one was foreign-language film because I didn’t see any of the movies. She gave me that one."
If Oka were voting for best picture, he said he would have picked "Gravity" for its "incredible special effects."
Second place of $100 and four movie passes goes to Aason Char of Kaimuki. The third-place winner, Kane Kaneyuki of Pearl City, wins $50 and two movie passes.
A total of 740 ballots were submitted by readers.
