Kilauea man arrested in fatal car crash on Kauai

Kauai police have arrested the 51-year-old Kilauea man who was the driver of a Ford pickup truck involved in a fatal head-on traffic collision in Kilauea Tuesday.

The man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of negligent injury and negligent homicide. He was released pending investigation.

The crash occurred on Kuhio Highway at about 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, just south of Wailapa Road.

Police said the Ford pickup truck driver was heading northbound when his truck apparently crossed the center line, sideswiping a southbound Jeep sport utility vehicle and striking a Dodge SUV. The head-on collision with the SUV left it overturned.

Police said a SUV’s driver, a 29-year-old man, was fatally injured. His identity was not released Wednesday.

A 55-year-old Kilauea man, who was a passenger in the SUV, was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, then flown to the Queen’s Medical Center where he remains in critical condition, police said.

The Jeep’s driver, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to Wilcox for treatment and was later released.

The pickup truck driver was treated at Wilcox and was arrested following his release from the hospital early Wednesday morning.

The accident marks first traffic fatality on Kauai this year.
