The Honolulu Police Department is warning residents of two telephone scams, one claiming to be connected with Central Pacific Bank.

Police said residents have received “vishing” or voice phishing messages from someone claiming to be from Central Pacific Bank.  Recorded messages tell residents that their CPB credit cards have been locked and that they must press “1” on their telephones to unlock their cards. 

The thieves are using the calls to try to obtain personal, financial information. Anyone who receives a call should ignore it and not provide any information. 

Investigators say that the calls are originating from mainland cities and foreign countries and that the callers are targeting the general public, not just CPB customers.  

In the second scam, residents are told that they have won a prize of millions of dollars in the “Spanish Sweepstakes.”  The calls originate from blocked or scrambled numbers in order to avoid identification and confuse residents.  

As with other lottery scams, the HPD said a person can only win a lottery or sweepstakes that they entered.

Legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes do not require any money up front.
