Safeway to be bought by Cerberus’ Albertsons for $9.2 billion

New York-based Cerberus, owner of the Albertsons supermarket chain, said Thursday it is buying the Safeway supermarket chain for $9.2 billion.

The two companies said there will be no store closings as a result of the purchase.

Safeway has 21 stores in Hawaii, including 14 on Oahu.

The company has 1,885 employees in Hawaii.

Safeway marked its 50th anniversary of doing business in Hawaii last year.
