UH softball team routs Valparaiso
Keiki Carlos drove in three runs and Loie Kesterson tossed a two-hit shutout in the University of Hawaii softball team’s 8-0 win over Valparaiso in five innings on Wednesday in the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Carlos opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning and added a two-run homer in UH’s six-run outburst in the third and the Rainbow Wahine improved to 12-10.
Kesterson (6-3) struck out two and walked five and earned her second shutout victory of her career.
UH is scheduled to play a doubleheader on Thursday. The Wahine face James Madison at 6 p.m. and BYU at 8.
Coming off a shutout loss to James Madison on Sunday, UH jumped ahead early on Wednesday with Carlos’ double to right-center scoring Jazmine Zamora, who went 3-for-3 in the game. Ulu Matagiese later scored Carlos from third with a two-out single to center.
After Zamora led off the bottom of the third with a single, Carlos hit her third home run of the season to give UH a 4-0 lead.

After a pitching change, Sarina Jaramillo drilled a two-run double into the left-center gap and Lindsey Willmon eventually scored her on a fielder’s choice grounder to give UH an eight-run lead.
Kesterson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth and retired the Crusaders (4-16) in order in the fifth to end the game.
