State stroke-play starts Thursday
Moanalua High School senior John Oda starts his quest for a three-peat Thursday when he tees off at 12:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
The 72-hole tournament ends Sunday at Pearl Country Club. The field is cut after Friday’s second round to the top 40 and ties in the open division and top 12 and ties among the seniors.
Play begins at 11:20 a.m. every day but Friday, when the first tee time is 6:50 a.m. The final round is scheduled to end around 5 p.m. Seniors play just 54 holes and skip Saturday.
Former Manoa Cup champs Brandan Kop, Matt Ma and Jonathan Ota are also in the field of 95.
Golf day coming up
The third annual Hawaii Junior Golf Day is March 22 at 12 courses on the four major islands. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and free clinics run from 9 to 11 a.m.
The day is designed for juniors with little or no experience. Clinics are run by PGA professionals.

» Justin Keiley, Baldwin ’10: The Brigham Young senior tied for 13th place at 9 over after shooting a team-best 1-under 70 on Tuesday in the final round of the Fresno State Classic.
» Alex Chiarella, Seabury Hall ’12: The San Diego sophomore shot rounds of 71, 74 and 73 to finish in a tie for 13th place at 2-over 218 at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Tuesday.
» David Fink, Iolani ’09: The Oregon State senior opened with a 2-under 70 before finishing in a tie for 32nd place at 8 over at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
» Lorens Chan, Iolani ’12: The UCLA sophomore finished in a tie for 42nd place at 13-over 229 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters that ended Sunday.
» SeungJae Maeng, Moanalua ’12: The Pacific (Calif.) sophomore shot an 82 in the final round of the Bandon Dunes Championships on Tuesday to finish in 65th place at 18-over 231.

» Kacie Komoto, Punahou ’13: The Northwestern freshman notched the first top 10 of her collegiate career, finishing in a tie for seventh place at 2-over 215 at the Hurricane Invitational last Wednesday.
» Ciera Min, Waiakea ’13: The Gonzaga freshman tied for 22nd at 12 over after shooting rounds of 75-78-75 in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational that ended Wednesday.
» Alice Kim, University ’11: The Gonzaga junior shot rounds of 78-75-78 to tie for 28th place at 15 over in the Thompson Invitational.
» Nani Yanagi, Waiakea ’12: The Washington State sophomore bounced back from a 9-over 81 to shoot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday and 75 on Wednesday to finish tied for 28th at 15 over in the Thompson Invitational.
