UH diver wins zone platform diving
Sophomore diver Amund Gismervik qualified for his second NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships event, winning Saturday’s NCAA Zone E Regional platform diving hosted by the Air Force Academy.
The Norwegian national scored 817.39 points, 32 better than runner-up Kristian Ipsen of Stanford in the field of 21 at Cadet Natatorium. Gismervik also qualified for the NCAA’s 3-meter event via a third-place finish Thursday.
Rainbow Wahine sophomore Lauren Hall also qualified for the women’s 1-meter event with her third-place finish Thursday. She finished 12th in Saturday’s platform.
The women’s championships are March 20-22 in Minneapolis. The men’s championships are March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
Suppa leads State Amateur Stroke Play golf
Punahou sophomore Kyle Suppa carded a third-round 5-under 67 Saturday to take a four-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club.
Suppa was at 11-under 205 after one of six sub-par rounds. Kengo Aoshima was in second at 68-209, with junior golfers Brent Grant, Shan Lu and Andrew Chin all tied for third at 211.
Maui’s Raymond Tendo had a two-stroke lead over Aiea’s Mike Kawate after 36 holes of the 54-hole senior open. Tendo carded a 72-142 and Kawate a 73-144 in Friday’s second round.
The final round of the open division tees off at 11:20 a.m. on the first tee and the senior division tees off at 11:10 a.m. on the 10th tee.
Seasiders’ win streak at 5 in softball
Brigham Young-Hawaii senior pitcher Gabby Hawkins limited Chaminade to a combined four hits in picking up the wins in Saturday’s PacWest softball doubleheader at BYUH field.
The Seasiders (7-13, 5-11) defeated the Silverswords (6-8, 5-7) 3-1 and 7-1 to run their win streak to five, the first time that has happened since 2005. Hawkins (5-4) has won four decisions in a row, turning in a three-hit complete-game effort in Game 1 and coming into Game 2 in relief in the fourth.
In the opener, BYUH got all of its runs in the fifth, using a bases-loaded illegal pitch by Chaminade to tie at 1 and a two-run single to left-center by Keagan Hanny.
BYU-Hawaii used a six-run fourth to break a 1-1 tie, highlighted by a two-run double by Taylor Alvarez.
Vulcans sweep Dominican in softball
Hannah Peterson and Ashley Nelson combined on a three-hitter in the nightcap and Hawaii Hilo completed a sweep of a PacWest softball doubleheader sweep of Dominican 8-0 and 9-1 at the UHH field.
Colleen Aubrey scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth and the Vulcans (15-9, 9-4 PacWest) walked off with an eight-run-rule-shortened victory over the Penguins (11-10, 5-5) for their fourth straight win.
In the opener, Nelson (8-4) allowed one hit with six strikeouts and Aubrey’s walk-off two-run double gave Hilo the victory in six innings.
HPU takes 2 from Academy of Art in softball
Hawaii Pacific shut out Academy of Art twice Saturday, sweeping the PacWest softball doubleheader at Okita Field 9-0 in five innings and 3-0.
In the opener, the Sea Warriors (10-12, 10-10 PacWest) scored five runs in the first and four in the fourth to run-rule the Urban Knights (4-12, 2-4). Chandell Dacosin (6-2) scattered three hits for the complete-game win.
In Game 2, HPU broke up the pitcher’s duel with three runs in the fifth, including two runs on an AAU throwing error. Kristen Caskey (4-9) also had a three-hit complete-game victory.
