On a frigid night in Waipio, Aubree Kim was red hot.
The Mililani ace struck out 10 and walked just one as the Trojans rallied for a 2-1 win over Campbell on Saturday night at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. A crowd of about 50 endured temperatures in the high 60s, gusts of up to 30 mph and a consistent drizzle.
None of that fazed Kim, who pitched without the benefit of warm long sleeves, preferring to go sleeveless all night. Coach Rose Antonio said Kim doesn’t feel as fluid with her motion while wearing sleeves of any kind.
"I just deal with it in the moment, but now I’m freezing," Kim said after permitting six hits in a pitcher’s duel with Campbell starter Elisa Favela.
Favela held her own, allowing just one earned run and eight hits. The right-hander struck out three and walked none.
Mililani improved to 4-0 in the OIA Red West, dropping Campbell to 1-2 with the hard-luck loss.
Campbell seemed destined for a big win, coming up with key defensive plays to thwart the Trojans. The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Caraugh Morris singled, reached second on an outfield error and scored on a two-out double to right by Kyra Hoohuli.
Mililani was resilient. Nicole Cox belted a two-strike double to left, scoring Karly Macadangdang, who had led off with a double of her own.
"I was looking for anything to hit," Cox said of the 0-2 pitch. "She was getting me on rise balls, but on that pitch it was a curve."
Two outs later, Markie Okamoto slapped a hard one-hop grounder to Campbell third baseman Darrien Robinson. The ball caromed off Robinson, who made a late throw to first. Courtesy runner Shannon Pascua-Stanton scored the go-ahead run from third base.
Kim then retired the side in the top of the seventh as Mililani remained unbeaten.
"We’re freezing our rears off," Trojans coach Rose Antonio said. "It’s a good win. It really felt like a playoff game. It’s still early in the season, but I’m very proud of them."
