A bicyclist in his 50s was taken in critical condition to a hospital Monday morning after he was hit by a tour bus on Nimitz Highway near Puuhale Elementary School.
Emergency Medical Services said the accident occurred at about 9 a.m.
Police said the large Travel Plaza Transportation bus, driven by a 43-year-old man, was headed west to the airport, traveling in the right lane, when it collided with the bicyclist at North Nimitz Highway and Puuhale Road.
Police said a witness reported that the bicyclist was riding in the crosswalk makai on Puuhale against the red light.
The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Man in fatal crash was from Waianae
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 39-year-old man killed Sunday in a crash in Nanakuli as Aaron Collins of Waianae.
Collins was the driver of a Chevrolet involved in a three-car accident Sunday afternoon on Farrington Highway near Auyong Homestead Road.
Collins died of blunt-force injuries of the torso and cardiac laceration due to the accident, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Police said a 24-year-old Kalihi man was driving a Lexus west on Farrington Highway, crossed a double solid centerline and collided with the oncoming Chevrolet, causing it to spin. The Chevrolet was broadsided by a Jeep.
Collins died at the scene. Police traffic investigators said two other people were injured in the crash.
The driver of the Lexus was arrested on suspicion of third-degree negligent homicide and second-degree negligent injury. He was released pending further investigation.
Suspect arrested in shooting on Kauai
Kauai police arrested a 32-year-old Kilauea man in connection with a shooting at his home Sunday.
Officers responding to a 3 p.m. emergency call found a 36-year-old Kilauea man with a single gunshot wound to his arm.
Before he was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment, the victim identified the suspect to police.
Police said they initially thought that the suspect had barricaded himself in a shed on the property, and they closed off Kilauea Road from Titcomb Street to Kahili Quarry Road as a precaution. Upon investigation it was determined that the suspect had fled the property before the police arrived.
Acting on a tip, investigators were later able to contact the suspect, who agreed to surrender. The man was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. on suspicion of attempted murder.
