Four UH sand teams advance to top tier
The University of Hawaii women’s sand volleyball team went 7-3 with four of its five teams advancing to the gold bracket after Friday’spool play competition of the Jack In The Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge at Queen’s Beach.
UH’s No. 1 pair of Karissa Cook/Brittany Tiegs, its No. 2 pair of Nikki Taylor/Katie Spieler and the No. 5 squad of London Chow/Tayler Higgins each went 2-0 in pool play. The No. 3 pair of Ginger Long and Ali Longo went 1-1 to finish top two in their pool and also advance. The third-place teams in each pool will play in the silver bracket. The tournament, which features teams from USC, Nebraska, Arizonaand Hawaii Pacific, will conclude Saturday with single-elimination play. First serve will be at 9 a.m. at Queen’s Beach.
Cook and Tiegs continued their tear, improving to 13-1 overall on the season.
No. 11 Wahine water polo wins in OT
Emily Carr sent the game into overtime with a goal with 23 seconds left in regulation and Caity Lopes da Silva scored won it with a goal with 26 seconds left in the second OT as the No. 11 University of Hawaii women’s water polo team stunned No. 12 Long Beach State 9-8 in a Big West opener at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Friday.
Carr finished with three goals, as did freshman Claire Nixon for the defending BWC champions.
Fujikawa ties for seventh in eGolf
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot a final-round 71 to finish in a tie for seventh in a weather-shortened eGolf Tour’s Northstone Open in Huntersville, N.C.
Fujikawa had rounds of 73-69-71 to finish at even-par 213 for the tournament that was shortened by a round and delayed three hours over the course of the tournament. Fujikawa earned $3,160. Adam Webb won at 5-under 208.
UH diver Hall finishes 36th in NCAAs
University of Hawaii’s Lauren Hall finished 36th in 3-meter diving and failed to qualify for the final round in the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis on Friday.
Hall posted a six-dive total of 261.15. Kaixuan Zhang of Southern Illinois won the event with a score of 389.20.
