Hawaii beats UAB to notch series win
Scott Kuzminsky fell one out short of his second complete game this week and Trevor Podratz hit the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Hawaii to a 4-2 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.
Kuzminsky (3-2) struck out a career-high six as Hawaii won its second series of the year, beating the Blazers (17-8) three times to even its record at 12-12 overall heading into Big West Conference play next week.
Juliene Jones replaced Kuzminsky with two on and two out in the ninth and got Nathan Vincent to ground out to the pitcher to end it.
Marc Flores hit an RBI single in the first and Stephen Ventimilia tied the game with an RBI double in the fifth.
Podratz put UH in front 3-2 with a one-out single in the eighth to score Flores and added an insurance run on a two-out RBI single by Matt Miller.
Hawaii opens BWC play on the road at UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
