Runners seeded for The Hapalua
Isabella Ochichi, one of Kenya’s top professional female runners, will be grouped with three of Hawaii’s top male runners with the lowest handicaps in The Chase portion of the April 13 Hapalua half-marathon.
Ochichi, a 2004 Olympic silver medalist at 5,000 meters, will be joined by Leandro Santillan and Fermin Villagran in the last "chase" group that goes off 41/2 minutes before the mass start at 6 a.m. Kenyans Patrick Makai and Peter Kirui, both of whom have sub-one-hour half-marathon times, go off at 6 a.m. with the goal to chase down the 25 elite runners and reach the Kapiolani Park finish line first.
There are six groups of elite runners with head starts ranging from 41/2 to 21 minutes. In the first group with a 5:39 a.m. start are Hawaii’s Rani Henderson, Lauren Ho, Eri Macdonald, Mariane Uehara, Lindsey Wilbur and Chelsea Wishard-Smith.
The course begins in front of the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, continues through Waikiki and around Diamond Head, ending at Kapiolani Park with the same finish line as the Honolulu Marathon. The event also includes relay teams.
Online registration is available through April 4. Late registration is available at packet pickup April 11 and 12 at the Hawaii Convention Center.
Kanaka Ikaika state race Saturday
Travis Grant has the lead of the Maui Jim Waterman’s Series heading into Saturday’s Kanaka Ikaika Scott Hawaii State Race.
Also on the line is the $50 American Eagle gold coin that will be awarded to the winner of the Scott Hawaii Gold Challenge. Saturday’s race counts toward half the points awarded for the three-race gold challenge.
The 20-mile course starts at 9:45 a.m. off Makai Pier and finishes at Duke Kahanamoku Beach. The 12-mile short course begins at 10:30 a.m. at Maunalua Bay with a Kahanamoku Beach finish.
Those competing in the Waterman’s Series will paddle OC-1s. Paddlers previously competed in races using designated watercraft: prone paddleboard, surfski and stand-up paddleboard.
Conner finishes Antarctica Marathon
Lt. Col. William Conner of Kailua successfully continued his quest to complete marathons on all seven continents when he finished the Antarctica Marathon earlier this month.
Despite a pulled calf muscle around the sixth mile, Conner was timed in 6 hours, 1 minute and 12 seconds for his fourth marathon on a different continent. He ran the course in utility uniform and boots, the latter which were auctioned off for $1,000 to add to his fundraising total of over $46,000 for the Semper Fi Fund.
Zukeran selected for USA swim camp
Victoria Zukeran was named to the 18-member girls team that will participate at USA Swimming’s Diversity Select Camp, May 1-4, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Zukeran, a home-school student who swims for Splash Aquatics, was chosen for her times in the 100 butterfly in the 13-14 age group. She will be accompanied by her coach, Ryan Muraoka.
