Visitors to the summit of Mauna Kea experienced snow and cloudy, wet conditions late Sunday afternoon.

A storm system that moved over the state brought snow to Mauna Kea overnight and rain to the Big Island and Maui Sunday afternoon.

About six inches of snow and patchy ice coated Mauna Kea overnight.  Mauna Loa also got a dusting of snow and ice. Temperatures dipped to into upper 20s to mid 30s for Big Island summits above 12,000 feet.

The lingering weather system brought some heavy afternoon rains to Maui, Lanai and Hawaii islands, but no major problems were reported.

Forecasters say more typical trade wind weather should slowly return to the state by Tuesday or Wednesday.

However, another weak weather system may bring enhanced trade wind showers to windward and mauka areas Monday and a threat of thunderstorms for interior and leeward slopes of Hawaii island Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
