Senior Joshua Inouye and the ‘Iolani baseball team waited eight days to hit the field, and when they did they didn’t miss a beat.

"Eight days is pretty long without a game," Inouye said. "It was a lot of workouts for me mentally, staying positive. I just had to trust in my defense and throw strikes. My defense bailed me out a lot today."

Inouye threw six innings of two-hit ball and ‘Iolani thumped ILH leader Mid-Pacific 10-0 in the second game of an ILH baseball quadruple header at Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday.

Inouye, who was hit pretty hard in a loss to Kamehameha the week before, was in control from the start, striking the Owls out in order in the first inning and holding them to one hit until ‘Iolani put together a long inning and he came out stiff. Inouye gave up two hits and only walked two batters. He gave up six runs in five innings against Kamehameha in his previous start.

Max Look, ‘Iolani’s leadoff hitter, fed off Inouye’s great start and doubled off the wall in left field to begin the bottom of the first. He scored on Christian Donahue’s ground ball to third, but Owls starter Alex Oley got out of it after an ‘Iolani runner was cut down at the plate.

‘Iolani added another run in the fourth off a double by Pikai Winchester and a sacrifice fly to right field by Corey Nakakura.

The Raiders blew open the game in the fifth, scoring five runs with two outs. Look started the parade with a single to center, followed by Bronson Ichimura with a walk and singles by Donohue and Winchester. Joshua Inaba followed with a walk and Nakakura drove in two more runs with a single to center. Inaba scored ‘Iolani’s seventh run on an error at third base.

The Owls put two runners on with one out in the sixth and waited out a long rain delay before Cal Muramaru walked to load the bases.

Inouye had a little trouble staying warm between ‘Iolani’s long inning and the weather delay, but snapped out of it to strike out Nicholas Bottom and Noah Shackles swinging to preserve the shutout.

"I had to go to the bullpen and warm up a little bit, and the rain didn’t help," Inouye said. "It took a few batters to get there. I just took a breather and remembered what my coaches taught me about process, process, process."

‘Iolani ended it via the mercy rule with three runs in the sixth, the final one coming on a passed ball.

Mid-Pacific (6-1-1) had been busy with four games during ‘Iolani’s break, but the Owls might have preferred having a week off. ‘Iolani’s win gave the defending ILH champions their first losing streak of the season after they were beaten soundly by Pac-Five on Friday.

The Owls, who used six pitchers to ‘Iolani’s one, will try to get back to their winning ways on Wednesday against Punahou while the Raiders (5-3) play Pac-Five on Thursday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
