Cooper nabs another Big West honor
Hawaii senior Matt Cooper was named the Big West Conference pitcher of the week for the second time this season on Monday.
The Rainbow right-hander tossed his fourth career complete game in a 3-1 win over then-No. 15 UC Santa Barbara on Friday, helping UH (14-13, 2-1) win two of three against the Gauchos (19-5, 1-2).
Cooper allowed six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts to lower his ERA to 1.26, which is third in the Big West. He also ranks third in the conference with 46 strikeouts and opponents are hitting .209 off of him.
Cooper is the first UH pitcher to throw at least two complete games in consecutive years since Ricky Bauer in 2003 and ’04.
The Rainbows return home to host UC Irvine (18-9, 2-1) for a three-game series beginning Friday night.
UH began the week with an RPI of 46.
