Maryknoll hoopster transfers to mainland
Exports from Hawaii, imports of Las Vegas.
The latest jump from the Pacific to the unofficial “ninth island” was made by one of the state’s most promising young basketball players, Maryknoll freshman Kamakana Winquist.
The 6-foot-3 swingman was a role player for the Spartans, but word of his family’s planned move to Las Vegas spread recently.
Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant confirmed the news this week.
Winquist joins a growing tally of local talent taking the path to Las Vegas.
Recently, Kaiser freshman linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia transferred to independent Bishop Gorman, as did Saint Louis’ young, uber-talented lineman/receiver Haskell Garrett. They followed in the footsteps of former Saint Louis linebacker Nela Otukolo, who transferred to Bishop Gorman a year ago.
Jayhawks eye Farrington lineman Fehoko
The University of Kansas is the latest to jump on the bandwagon known as Fehoko or bust.
Farrington defensive tackle/defensive end Breiden Fehoko received a scholarship offer from the Jayhawks on Monday. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound junior was a Star-Advertiser All-State selection last fall. Hawaii was early on Fehoko, offering him in his freshman season, but the list keeps growing.
“I’m totally neutral right now,” said Fehoko, who has a 4.0 grade-point average. “I’ll probably narrow it down in August.”
Big 12, SEC, Pac-12. The big conferences are in.
According to 247sports.com, Fehoko has 20 offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Stanford, Utah, Vanderbilt with “warm” interest. Other offers have come from Arizona State, Cal, Kansas, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Pitt, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Utah State, Weber State and Wisconsin.
ESPN.com lists him with 16 offers. Yahoo has 19 schools on his offer list. Count the other schools that have shown serious interest — prepared to make an offer — and it’s nearly 30 in all.
Fehoko confirmed that BYU also made an offer, though the Cougars are not on these lists.
