Nguyen on Pacquiao fight card
Former Junior Olympic amateur boxer Dat Nguyen of Wailuku will fight Oscar Valdez as part of the undercard for the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight on April 12 at the MGM Grand’s Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Nguyen, a Baldwin graduate, is 17-3 with six KOs. Valdez, the two-time Olympian from Mexico at 126 pounds, is 9-0, all by knockout.

Surfboard graveyard swap meet at expo
A surfboard graveyard swap meet is among the new attractions at the sixth Hawaii Ocean Expo on Saturday and Sunday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
The surfboard swap meet will benefit Na Kama Kai, a nonprofit organization founded by Duane DeSoto to bring ocean safety and conservation awareness to Hawaii youth. DeSoto’s project plans to take 30 surfboards to youth on Molokai.

The expo also features ocean awareness exhibitions, poke contests, a boat show and ocean apparel. A shoreline fishing tournament will be held in conjunction, starting Friday at noon and running until noon Sunday. There is a $1,000 prize for the biggest ulua over 100 pounds.
The expo runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for ages 13-18 and free for 12-and-under.
Tantalus Time Trial on Sunday
The Tantalus Time Trial, the oldest continuously run bicycling race in Hawaii, is set for Sunday.
Cyclists will climb some 1,400 feet on a curvy 41⁄2 -mile course to the summit. Racing begins at 7 a.m. at the Makiki Heights Pumping Station, with competitors going off at 30-second intervals.
Packet pickup is Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Bike Shop, 1149 South King St. Packets also will be at Sunday’s check-in from 6 to 6:45 a.m.
Japanese team at roller derby
The Tokyo Roller Girls from Japan will compete in two of Pacific Roller Derby’s bouts next weekend.
The Roller Girls face the PRD’s Hulagans at 6:45 p.m. on April 12, at Palama Settlement Gym. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for kamaaina and military and no charge for youth 12 and under.
On April 13, the Hulagans take on the Paradise Roller Girls from the Big Island at 10:30 a.m. in the first bout of a free doubleheader at Kamiloiki Park hockey rink in Hawaii Kai. The second bout has Paradise versus Tokyo at 1 p.m.
The PRD is coordinating a donation drive with Safe Haven, a Honolulu homeless shelter, at the April 12 bout. Needed are clothing, shoes, home goods, books, backpacks and hygiene items.
Fin Swim coming up
The Waikiki Swim Club hosts its annual Fin Swim, a 2,000-meter race where swimmers must wear fins, on April 12.
The swim begins at 8 a.m. off the Magic Island end of Ala Moana Beach Park with competitors swimming 1,000 meters toward Kewalo Basin, turning on a buoy, and swimming 1,000 meters back to the starting point.
Entry fee is $25 if postmarked by Saturday. The late entry fee is $35 and will be accepted at 7:30 a.m. on race day. For information, go to waikikiswimclub.org.
