A 21-year-old woman accused of breaking into Iolani Palace in February has been charged with criminal felonies.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Thursday charging Drew Paahao with criminal property damage and burglary.
A state judge issued a $25,000 bench warrant for her arrest.
The criminal property damage charge alleges that Paahao caused damage to Iolani Palace on Feb. 8 exceeding $20,000. It is a Class B felony that carries a maximum term of 10 years in prison.
The burglary charge alleges that Paahao entered the building intending to commit theft. It is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
The executive director of Iolani Palace said surveillance cameras captured images of a woman kicking a door at the front of the palace with enough force to open it and break its glass pane.
The cameras then captured images of the woman and a man entering the palace’s Great Hall and attempting to flee as palace guards pursued and captured them. The man involved in the incident has not been charged with any crime.
The glass pane is an original part of Iolani Palace. It was transported from England to San Francisco to be etched in time for it to be installed for the palace’s opening in 1882.
