Kuehu earns awards at hoops banquet
Shawna Kuehu was the big winner at the Rainbow Wahine basketball 2013-14 postseason banquet on Sunday night at the Ala Moana Hotel, receiving both the Ah Chew Goo Award and the most valuable team player award as voted by her teammates.
The Ah Chew Goo award, the team’s top honor, is described as going to a player who "attains basketball excellence through dedication, determination and perseverance."
Kuehu, an all-around performer at the wing position, was technically a senior for a Wahine team that went 17-14 and made it to the first round of the WNIT for the second straight season. But she and coach Laura Beeman are optimistic the Punahou product will receive another season of eligibility to play in 2014-15.
Junior wing Ashleigh Karaitiana received the hustle award and senior forward Diane Moore was granted the scholar award.
Kuehu, senior forward Kamilah Jackson and junior point guard Morgan Mason also received recognition for their roles as team captains.
UH’s Spieler-Taylor team reaches silver final
In the second and final day of the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge, the Hawaii tandem of Katie Spieler and Nikki Taylor reached the championship match of the 16-team silver bracket on Sunday in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Spieler and Taylor lost in the final to USC’s Alexa Strange and Kelly Claes in three sets, 21-13, 14-21, 15-13. Also in the silver bracket for Hawaii were Ginger Long and Ali Longo, who lost in the semifinals to Strange and Claes.
Hawaii ends the regular season Friday and Saturday at the Big West Challenge in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Hawaii water polo team wins in a rout
Emily Carr scored four goals as No. 9 Hawaii ended the water polo regular season with a 14-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Danielle Lewis recorded a hat trick in the win for UH (17-9), which plays in the Big West Conference tournament later this month.
Team Hawaii wins ISA World Juniors
Gold was won by Team Hawaii at the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Ecuador.
Tatiana Weston-Webb won the U-18 girls division for the second straight year, while Mahina Maeda successfully defended her U-16 girls championship.
