Copper stolen from reservoir monitor
Copper thieves in the past week struck a Honolulu Board of Water Supply reservoir twice — one time disrupting water service for some Kalihi residents.
The agency said Monday afternoon it needs the community’s help to protect its facilities.
On April 6, vandals cut through the copper wires of the communication system that monitors water levels in the Kalihi 614 reservoir, the board said.
Service to an estimated 100 homes in Kalihi Valley was affected and was restored within four hours; water quality was not affected, the board said.
The same reservoir was hit again on Friday. The insulation covering cables was burned before copper wiring owned by Hawaiian Telcom was cut and removed, the board said. Water service was not affected.
Both cases remain under investigation, and the board said it is working to increase security.
Anyone trespassing on Board of Water Supply property, including reservoirs, faces up to $600 in fines and six months in prison. Suspicious activity at water facilities should be reported to police, or to board security at 748-5911, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Woman killed in moped crash identified
The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 24-year-Colorado woman who was killed when the moped she was driving collided with a delivery truck in front of Turtle Bay Resort on Sunday as Kelli Allen.
An autopsy will be conducted.
Allen is from Basalt, Colo.
The accident occurred just after 2 p.m. when the victim was trying to turn onto Kamehameha Highway from Kuilima Drive and sideswiped a 2007 white delivery truck.
Police said the victim was making a wide turn on her 2013 white moped into the opposite lane of traffic when she hit the truck and was thrown to the pavement.
She was taken in critical condition to Pali Momi Medical Center, where she died.
The driver of the truck, a 26-year-old man, and his passenger, a 47-year-old man, were not injured.
This was Oahu’s 20th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 22 at the same time a year ago.
