BYUH, HPU cruise in PacWest tournament
Top-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Dominican 5-0 in the opener of the Pacific West Conference women’s tennis championships in Surprise, Ariz., on Thursday.
The Seasiders (24-0) won all three points in the doubles competition and then received points from Sasha Ulbrichtova and Jade Griffin in singles play. BYU-Hawaii faces fourth-seeded Academy of Art in a semifinal on Friday.
Second-seeded Hawaii Pacific (16-5) won its opening-round match against Fresno Pacific 5-0. HPU faces third-seeded Azusa Pacific in the other Friday semifinal.
In the men’s competition, top seed Hawaii Pacific (17-0) swept eighth-seeded Hawaii Hilo (1-16) 5-0. HPU takes on BYU-Hawaii in Friday’s semifinal.
BYU-Hawaii (12-5) advanced with a 5-1 victory over Sonoma State on Thursday. The Seasiders took two of three points in the doubles competition and all three in singles.
Azusa Pacific baseball beats Hawaii Hilo
Joseph Daris had four hits and drove in two runs as Azusa Pacific routed UH Hilo 11-3 at Wong Stadium in Hilo on Thursday.
Jordan Brower added two hits and drove in three runs for the Cougars (23-14 overall, 16-9 Pacific West Conference).
Jonathan James had two hits and two runs batted in for the Vulcans (10-28, 8-19). The teams continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday, with game one beginning at 4 p.m.
