It was windy and wet, just the way Kahili Novikoff expects weather on the hill to be.

The Kamehameha senior responded to the intermittent gusts and sprinkly showers with her best shot put mark of the season, taking individual titles in that event and the discus on Friday at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championships at Kunuiakea Stadium. 

"The weather doesn’t bother me," she said. "We deal with the same wind at practice, and it kind of went away when we threw. And the rain dried up. If it gets really wet, I change out of my throwing shoes into my running shoes for more traction, but it got dry enough." 

Knowing the climate on Kapalama Heights certainly helped the Warriors. While some throwers had trouble catching traction on the wet synthetic surface, Novikoff put the shot 41 feet, 11.5 inches, her best distance this year. She also threw the discus 129 feet, 6 inches, less than 2 feet off her personal record. 

"It definitely feels the same," she said, comparing this year to last, when she won the shot put state title with a distance of 42-10.5. "I’m peaking at the right time, so close to states. That’s always an advantage, to have (states) at Kamehameha." 

With the state championships coming up in two weeks, everything seems to be coming together for the Hana, Maui, native. 

"We’re excited," assistant coach Kim Terai said. "She had a great summer, and she also won state championships in paddling for mixed crew and women’s crew." 

Assistant coach Rob Santos has engineered another well-designed plan for Novikoff and his throwers.

"Coach Rob is very careful about it. You don’t want them to peak too early," Terai said. 

The Warriors had a strong showing, finishing second in the boys and girls team standings to perennial powerhouse Punahou. 

"The girls were saying how cool it is that track brings so many people together, supporting each other," Terai said. "Kahili’s character, her work ethic, the way she’s always encouraging her teammates. We’re going to miss that about her."

Her toughest competition at states will likely be Kahoa Mikaele of Kailua in the discus and Sabrina Hollins of Waipahu in the shot put.

Mikaele threw the discus 141 feet at the recent Cal Track/Ruby Tuesday Invitational at Punahou’s Alexander Field. Hollins bested Novikoff at the recent Honolulu Marathon meet with a shot put distance of more than 38 feet, Novikoff said. 

Weather on the hill is familiar to Novikoff, who lives right up the driveway in the dormitory, as she has since seventh grade. 

"When she went (to Kapalama) in seventh grade, she didn’t want to," said Shayne Novikoff, Kahili’s mother. "After about a month, she started to acclimate real good." 

Being on campus has been a big plus for academics, Novikoff noted. She has a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and had a 3.8 in the recent third quarter. Living there has helped with athletics, as well. 

"I started paddling in sophomore year and the bonds I made are so great. I kind of wish I started paddling freshman year," Novikoff said. 

Next up for Kahili is a move to the Northwest. She will attend St. Martin’s, a Division II college in Washington. UH was interested, but by that time, the offer from St. Martin’s was too good to pass up.

"I visited with my mom during spring break and I liked it. At first, one of my options was to try rowing in college," she said. "But all the rowing schools I was looking at were on the East Coast and I kind of didn’t want to go that far, and rowing is different from paddling. Washington state is kind of perfect." 

"I do want to go away," she said. It’s another opportunity for me to experience new things."
