Punahou teammates earn all-conference honors
Villanova water polo teammates Naomi Ng and Sarina Shibata, who both graduated from Punahou in 2012, were honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference prior to the start of the conference tournament on Friday.
Ng was named to the All-MAAC first team, while Shibata took home second-team honors.
Ng scored 34 goals for the Wildcats this season and helped lead Villanova to its third consecutive berth in the four-team conference tournament.
Shibata led Villanova with 66 goals scored.
Ng scored four of the team’s six goals in a 16-6 loss to top-seeded Wagner in the semifinals on Saturday.
Shibata added one goal in the game and scored twice in a 13-7 loss to Iona in the third-place game on Sunday. Ng scored once.
Villanova’s 10 wins were the program’s most since 2007.
>> UC San Diego goalkeeper Courtney Miller, who was a teammate with Ng and Shibata at Punahou, was named to the all-tournament team after helping the Tritons win their third Western Water Polo Association championship in four years.
Miller, a sophomore, had 10 saves in a 16-3 win over Cal State East Bay on Sunday to clinch the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. UCSD (26-10), which was seeded seventh in the 10-team tournament, will host a play-in game on Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer.
Oshiro, Matsunaga earn top honors
Pacific (Ore.) junior Kylee Oshiro and Pacific Lutheran senior Lindsey Matsunaga were both named first team All-Northwest Conference in softball on Tuesday.
Oshiro was a unanimous selection after finishing second in the conference with 41 RBIs. The 2011 Moanalua alumna hit .421 with 45 hits and 19 runs scored and was called "the backbone of the team" by Boxers head coach Tim Hill in a news release. It’s the second time in her three-year career she’s earned first-team honors.
Matsunaga, who was named to the second team as a junior, was one of five infielders chosen. The 2010 Kaimuki graduate hit .336 with 11 doubles, four homers and 28 RBIs.
Pacific Lutheran junior Tori Hamura (Mid-Pacific ’11) and Pacific (Ore.) junior Kaitlyn Shikada (‘Iolani ’11) were honorable mentions.
Shigezawa repeats as SCIAC champ
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps senior Bradley Shigezawa repeated as the Southern California Interscholastic Association Conference champion in men’s golf on Tuesday, helping the Stags win their first team title since 1995.
Shigezawa, a 2010 Punahou alumnus, won his only tournament of the spring after missing time with an undisclosed injury. He closed with a 3-over 75 in tough conditions on Tuesday, but managed to coast to the title after opening the tournament with a 68 and a 69. Shigezawa was the only golfer in the event to finish under par and won by 10 shots over the top-ranked golfer in Division III.
Jenkins wins 3 times in title meet
Southern University sophomore Devin Jenkins won three events at the Southwestern Athletic Conference championships on Friday.
The 2012 Kapolei alumnus won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.66 seconds in the final, tying the conference record set last year. He also won the 200-meter dash (20.92) and finished the day running one leg on the team’s 400-meter relay squad that took first in a time of 40.42 seconds.
The Jaguars finished second in the standings.
