Buy mochi to back Taiko Arts Center
Been wanting to try Hilo’s famous Two Ladies Kitchen strawberry mochi but haven’t made it to Hawaii island yet? Taiko Arts Center may be able to fulfill your wish.
The center is taking pre-orders as a fundraiser at taikoartscenter.org for ichigo daifuku (strawberry mochi, $10 for three to five pieces) or assorted mochi/manju ($8 for six pieces).
Pickup is 9 a.m. to noon May 10 at Petrie Community Park or Waimalu Elementary School. Payment deadline is Saturday.
Two more rounds: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 17 at Kapiolani Community College cafeteria, with payment by May 11; and June 27, payment by June 20.
Submit Obon events to Today by May 21
The summer Obon season carries on the Buddhist tradition of commemorating family ancestors, who are said to return to this world to visit relatives. In Hawaii the colorful and lively festivals have become a must-do cultural event for residents and visitors alike, regardless of religious persuasion.
