Dorrien Villanueva-Hermosura saved his best performance for a night like this.
The left-hander went 3-for-4 at the plate and hurled five innings on the mound to lead Campbell over Kailua 9-3 for the OIA Red baseball championship at Hans L’Orange Field. This makes two OIA Red titles in a row for the Sabers and coach Rory Pico.
"Kailua’s a good team and they hit the ball. Some of those outs were hard-hit balls, but we expected that," he said. "We know Kailua is a tough team."
Campbell, ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, finished 14-1 in league play and made a strong push for the top seed in the upcoming state tournament. The Sabers did it by stifling a hot Kailua squad that had won five of its previous six games, including a quarterfinal victory over Waipahu on Thursday and a semifinal victory over Mililani on Friday.
Villanueva-Hermosura was crafty, crisp and effective. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. The junior retired the first nine batters he faced before allowing two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Pico lifted his starter for Ian Kahaloa, who struck out two of the three batters he faced in the sixth inning. Keola Himan closed the game out with a scoreless seventh frame.
It was a luxury of pitching depth that Pico didn’t hesitate to use, even though Villanueva-Hermosura threw just 53 pitches.
"He had some arm issues coming into the tournament, so we didn’t want to push him," Pico said. "He was able to throw his off-speed pitches for strikes, and that’s what’s worked for him all year. He’s a gamer and a good player, no doubt about that, clutching up for us all year."
Villanueva-Hermosura, who says he enjoys hitting more than pitching, was still poised after the game as the team accepted leis and hugs from family and friends.
"Just had to trust the team and our defense. The coaches pushed us as hard as we wanted," Villanueva-Hermosura said. "I just threw what (pitching coach David Perreira) called."
His curveball set up his repertoire. He permitted three runs on four hits.
"Just had to trust my defense and get grounders," he added. "Now we’ve just got to work hard, flush this and focus on states. Nobody knows what can happen."
The Sabers (14-1) had a fairly modest eight hits but benefited from three Kailua errors that led to five unearned runs.
With a strong, vocal following of about 70 fans, coach Corey Ishigo’s Surfriders (11-4) had already clinched a state-tourney berth. Some players were in tears after the loss.
"Being a senior, I feel I didn’t do enough to help this team. These boys did good," Kanoho said. "We didn’t deserve to lose."
Campbell capitalized on Kailua’s defensive giveaways from the start. Leadoff man Jobe Ibana reached on an error by second baseman Brendan Odo, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dewayne Sprinkel and scored on a two-out single to center by Villanueva-Hermosura.
The opportunistic Sabers stole six bases, often with runners at the corners.
"Every pitch was working today. Fastball, curveball, change-up, cutter. My curve wasn’t working at first," said Kahaloa, who pitched nine innings for a complete-game 3-2 win over Kaiser just two nights earlier.
Kanoho believes in his team and expects quite a bit at the state tourney.
"Any team is beatable. We’ll look past this game, practice what we need to work on and win states," he said.
