St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii said it is laying off 110 of its 380 employees when it closes its in-patient hospice unit in Ewa and home health programs on Oahu and Kauai.
The home health care program will operate through June 30, while the in-patient hospice unit will continue through Sept. 30. Hospice patients will be accepted at the Ewa facility, on the former St. Francis Medical Center campus, through Aug. 1.
The affected employees include nurses and nonclinical administrative support staff.
“This is a difficult time for all of us at St. Francis. Having to scale back some of our services and lose great employees is not easy,” Jerry Correa, St. Francis’ president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “We have had to assess which programs and services best support our multi-year strategic plan and the decisions we are making today will help us to be more financially sustainable in the future, so that we can carry on the legacy of the Sisters of St. Francis.”
There are no plans for cuts to any other programs.
