Hikers lost in Kuliouou airlifted to safety
Rescuers airlifted a man and woman in their 60s from the Kuliouou Ridge Trail area Sunday morning after the couple became lost, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.
The two were unable to find their way back from their location about a mile off the trail, fire inspector David Jenkins said.
The uninjured couple called for help at about 11:20 a.m. They were airlifted using the department’s rescue helicopter and dropped off at the trail head, Jenkins said. No medical attention was needed.
Firefighters battle blaze in Kapolei brush
Firefighters battled a 2-acre brush fire in Kapolei on Sunday, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.
The blaze flared up at about 2:20 p.m. near 2260 Lauwiliwili St. No injuries or property damage were reported, fire inspector David Jenkins said.
Eight companies responded to the scene, and 21 HFD personnel worked to get the fire under control by 2:59 p.m. Jenkins said light wind worked in firefighters’ favor.
The cause and origin of the blaze are not yet known, but Jenkins said firefighters reported somebody lighting a fire nearby, and one suspicious person was reported at the site.
"If anyone sees a suspicious person or suspicious activity before, during or after a brush fire, please call the police either at 911 or CrimeStoppers," Jenkins said.
Car owner chases, detains theft suspect
A car alarm led to the arrest of an alleged thief early Sunday morning, Honolulu police said.
A 33-year-old man told police he was camping at a Kahuku-area beach park when he heard his car alarm go off at about 2:30 a.m. and went to check it out. He noticed a man running from the area and chased him, according to police.
Police said the camper was able to catch and detain the suspect. A later look at his car revealed that the front passenger side window had been smashed and that items had been stolen from inside the car.
Arriving officers arrested the suspect, a 28-year-old man with no local address, on suspicion of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle around 3:30 a.m. near 56-335 Kamehameha Highway, according to police records.
