Vulcans men in sixth place at regional
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team was tied for sixth and Vulcans senior Chris Shimomura was in a six-way tie for seventh heading into Tuesday’s second round of the NCAA West Super Regional at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Houston.
The Vulcans carded an aggregate 300 to tie Colorado-Colorado Springs at 12 over. Cal State Monterey Bay was at 288 in the 20-team field.
Shimomura was at even-par 72, three strokes behind leader Brandon Hortt of CSUMB.
Other Vulcans golfers: Corey Kozuma and Dalen Yamauchi were tied for 13th with seven others at 73; and Christian Agosto and Kyeton Littel were tied for 89th with four others at 82.
The 54-hole event continues through Wednesday.
Hawaii Hilo women in seventh place
Kristen Sawada was tied for ninth and Hawaii Hilo was in seventh place heading into Tuesday’s second round of the NCAA Division II Super Region IV women’s golf tournament at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas.
Sawada shot a first-round 77 to trail leader Hee-Leina Kim of Colorado State-Pueblo by six strokes. The Vulcans were at 326, 20 strokes behind St. Edward’s in the nine-team regional.
Other Vulcans competing were Nyssa Aoki, tied for 18th (80); Dayna Bersamin, tied for 33rd (84); Jade Salvador, tied for 38th (85); Kacie Harada, tied for 41st (86).
The tournament continues through Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Chaminade’s Endow earns academic honor
Chaminade junior second baseman Kristiann Endow was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Softball First Team.
The Kalani High graduate started 29 games for the Silverswords at second base, finishing second on the team in assists with 55 and fourth in putouts with 68. She is also a three-time Pacific West Conference All-Academic selection.
Endow, an elementary education major, has a cumulative 3.93 GPA in her two years at Chaminade and had a 3.9 GPA in her two years at Hawaii Pacific before transferring in 2012. Endow is now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-American Team that will be announced later this month.
BASKETBALL
Standout guard signs with Chaminade
David Ware, a 6-foot-3 guard from Everett (Wash.) Community College, has signed to play for Eric Bovaird next season. Ware averaged 15.1 points and 7.2 rebounds, leading the 33-team NAACC in assists (8.57 apg) and steals (3.1 spg). He prepped at Silverado High in Las Vegas.
VOLLEYBALL
Silverswords sign 7 for fall seasons
St. Francis senior Natashya Enos and Hilo High graduate Waihilo Chartrand, a transfer from Eastern Arizona, headline Chaminade coach Kahala Kabalis’ fall recruiting class.
Enos, who helped the Saints to two Division II state titles, is one of four freshmen to sign with the Silverswords. The others are: Cassidy Acord, a 6-foot outside hitter from Brandeis High in San Antonio; Kira Long, a 5-9 outside hitter from Rancho Buena Vista in San Diego; and Catherine Thomason, a 6-foot outside hitter from Marin Catholic School in Kentfield, Calif.
Chartrand, one of three junior college transfers, was a libero and defensive specialist during two seasons with the Gila Monsters. She will be joined by EAC teammate Suncica Bakic, a 6-foot junior opposite from Montenegro, and Madalene Barrett, a 6-foot sophomore outside hitter from Fullerton (Calif.) Junior College.
SOCCER
Chaminade signs 5 for men’s team
Avinash Kaui Singh, a senior at Kamehameha-Maui, signed to play for Chaminade next season, one of five in coach Zach Kingsley’s fall recruiting class.
Singh helped the Warriors to consecutive third-place finishes in the state championships, the first D-I appearances in the program’s history.
Joining him are three transfers: Austin Bush, Hanover College (Indiana); Andilla College (Spain) goalie Rene Mejia; and Lukas Pousset of Francis Marion (South Carolina).
Also signing is Jacob Muniz, a senior left back-center midfielder from Lincoln High in San Jose, Calif.
