Hilo golfers qualify for NCAA tournament
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team shot a 299 in the final round of the West/South Central Regional on Wednesday in Austin, Texas. The three-day team score of 894 was good enough to clinch a tie for second place and a spot in the NCAA Division II championships.
Vulcans golfers Corey Kozuma shot a 1-under 71 and finished third overall, while teammate Chris Shimomura fired a 1-over 73 to take fourth.
The NCAA D-II championships are May 19-23 at the Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
UHH women’s golf finishes regional
Hawaii Hilo finished in seventh place at the NCAA Division II Women’s Super Region 4 with a total of 972 on Wednesday at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas. In the final round, the Vulcans shot a 308, their best score of the regional.
UHH’s Kristen Sawada finished in a tie for 11th place, with a three-round total of 236.
Calip is a Big West honorable mention
Hawaii golfer Nainoa Calip was named All-Big West Conference honorable mention following the conference championships last week in Davis, Calif.
Calip, a senior from Hilo, led the team in four of the six spring tournaments and finished his senior season with a team-best 72.8 scoring average.
