Gymnasts to Junior Olympics
Three Level 10 gymnasts from Hawaii begin competing at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics National Championships Friday in Jackson, Miss.
Advancing are Hawaiian Island Twisters Lauren Lauro Laura (Junior C Division) and Jenna Domingo (Junior A). Maela Lazaro from Rainbow Gymnastics is competing in Junior C.
Seven other Level 9 gymnasts from Hawaii competed at the Western National Championships last weekend in Boise, Idaho, against 400 others from the west region. Janyce Apuya of Rainbow Gymnasts had the best finish, taking 16th all-around in the Senior A Division.
Also competing from Rainbow Gymnastics were Chloe Camillo, 26th all-round (Senior A); Miya Makabe, 33rd all-around (Senior A); Taryn Oda, 47th all-around (Junior A); and Ciello Magsanide, 45th all-around (Junior B). Competing from Hawaiian Island Twisters were Mariah Tanner, 13th in uneven and 47th all-around (Junior C), and Savanna Lohr, tying for 35th all-around (Senior D).
Football clinic focuses on safety
USA Football’s "Heads Up Football" clinic Saturday will offer youth coaches instruction in proper tackling mechanics and concussion education at Aiea High.
The safety clinic runs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and also includes instruction on proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting. USA Football Master Trainers Doug Cosbie and Terry Summerfield headline the staff, which includes Oahu Pop Warner player safety coaches.
Molokai race tuneup Saturday
The inaugural Epic Kayaks Makapuu Dash, a tuneup for next weekend’s Molokai Channel World Surfski Championships, is set for Saturday.
Both the long and short courses are from Makai Pier to Maunalua Bay, with the long course including a turning buoy a mile out off Makapuu. The divisions are surfski, OC-1, V-1, OC-2, SS-2, OC-3 and OC-6 for both races, with paddleboards allowed for the short course.
Check-in and late registration is from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. at Makai Pier.
Bike to Work Day next Friday
Oahu’s annual Bike to Work Day is May 16, and will offer free "energizer stations" at selected locations on Oahu.
The stations are open from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. and will be located at the Civic Center path off Punchbowl Street; in Kalihi at the intersection of Dillingham Boulevard and Kalihi Street; in Kakaako at the intersection of Ward Avenue and Halekauwila Street; in Kapahulu at the intersection of Kapahulu Avenue and Date Street; and at the Manoa Library and Honolulu Zoo.
The event is part of the Honolulu Bicycling League’s "May is Bicycling Month." Other events include the May 17 "Bike to the Zoo Day," where cyclists arriving at the zoo between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. will get free admission to the zoo and valet bike parking.
