Looking back on the Campbell softball team’s development, coach Michael Hermosura noted the Sabers’ struggles to bunch hits together early in the season.
They’ve had no such trouble in the state tournament while sophomore pitcher Elisa Favela continued to baffle opposing hitters.
The Sabers pounded out 17 hits in a 10-0 victory over Leilehua on Thursday in the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship.
Leadoff hitter Cydney Curran went 4-for-4 and scored three runs to spark the Campbell offense, and Favela and Nashlynn Anguay drove in seven runs between them in the middle of the order to send the Sabers to their third appearance in the state final in the past five years.
Campbell entered the postseason as the OIA Red West’s third seed and finished fourth in the league tournament. A day after knocking off top-seeded Kamehameha in the state quarterfinals, the Sabers improved on last year’s third-place finish by advancing to Friday’s 7 p.m. championship game.
"We’re so excited, we’re hyped, we can’t ask for anything more," said Anguay, who went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in four runs. "We’ve worked hard all season for this.
Favela had two doubles, drove in three runs and was equally productive in the pitchers circle while throwing her third straight two-hitter of the state tournament and second shutout. She took a perfect game into the sixth inning, retiring the first 15 batters she faced on 49 pitches, and finished with four strikeouts with no walks.
Shanaye Mattson broke up Favela’s bid for the tournament’s third no-hitter with a line single to left center to lead off the top of the sixth. Favela gave up another single but kept the shutout intact, and the Sabers brought the 10-run rule into effect on Anguay’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
"She wants the ball all the time," Hermosura said of Favela. "She’s within herself, she wants it and is just a fired-up person right now."
Curran ignited the Sabers with a double to lead off the game and scored the first run on Caragh Morris’ infield single. Curran singled in her next three at bats, driving in a run in the fifth. Anguay delivered a two-run double in the third and Favela did the same in the fourth as the Sabers pulled away.
